How Much Turmeric in a Day is Healthy? – You May Be Surprised

Ok. I love turmeric. I love it’s benefits, it’s taste and I love it’s healing power. But how much turmeric in a day is healthy? Let’s start with how much turmeric I have. I have turmeric in my juices at least five times a week. 2 to 4 inches of the root each day. I am fit, healthy and have never had any side effects from taking it. From my point of view you can take as much as you like and it won’t harm you. But common sense tells you to take what you need and that is it. So I really have to ask ‘how much turmeric in a day is healthy?

Different Types of Turmeric

Another thing to consider is how many different ways you can take turmeric and how much of the active ingredient curcumin it contains. Here are some of the ways to take turmeric –

  • Fresh turmeric root
  • Turmeric dried root powder
  • Supplements
  • Liquid extracts
  • Turmeric bars

How much turmeric in a day is healthy? All these different types of turmeric have different amounts of curcumin. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and is the most potent part of the root. However turmeric root only contains between 2 and 5 per cent of curcumin.

But how much turmeric in a day is healthy? Let’s look at the research and what dosage is recommended (and if you know me you know I don’t trust research as most of it is done by those with an agenda like Big Pharmaceutical companies).

How Much Turmeric in a Day is Healthy?

The University of Maryland in the US has done some research studies on turmeric and they recommend the following doses –

  • Fresh turmeric root – 1.5 to 3 grams per day.
  • The root powder turmeric – 1 to 3 grams per day
  • Standardized powder (curcumin) – 400 – 600 mg, 3 times per day
  • Fluid extract (1:1) – 30 – 90 drops a day

Which is fine. However they do say in their studies that there are side effects. This is an extract from their paper –

“Turmeric and curcumin supplements are considered safe when taken at the recommended doses. However, taking large amounts of turmeric for long periods of time may cause stomach upset and, in extreme cases, ulcers. People who have gallstones or obstruction of the bile passages should talk to their doctor before taking turmeric.

If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor before taking turmeric supplements. Turmeric may lower blood sugar levels. When combined with medications for diabetes, turmeric could cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Although it is safe to eat foods with turmeric, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take turmeric supplements.

Because turmeric may act like a blood thinner, you should stop taking it at least 2 weeks before surgery. Tell your doctor and surgeon that you have been taking turmeric.”

Why I Don’t Trust Doctors and Big Pharma

how much turmeric in a day is healthyWarning: Controversial section! – Do you see the connection here? Doctors! According to most research that is done on natural remedies like turmeric they always ask people to consult their doctor first. Do you know why? Because doctors are beholden to the Big Pharmaceuticals and Big Pharma doesn’t want anyone steering to far away from pills.

Medication, pills, vaccines and the cold and flu tablets you buy in the chemist or supermarket are making Big Pharma and doctors billions of dollars a year. So of course they have set limits on how much turmeric you can take before you apparently get side effects. And they always make sure you know that natural remedies can interfere with their medications. So the message is don’t take natural remedies while you are on medications because Big Pharma will lose money!

Ok so that is my little rant on Big Pharma. Don’t trust them as far as I could throw them. But lets get a little more serious here. There are other studies that say you can take up to 8grams a day

Certainly as a preventative measure 4 to 5 grams a day is safe. For curative measures 8 to 10 grams is fine as this Pubmed article shows.

So what does all this tell you? No one knows how much turmeric you can take a day. Yes you may get an upset stomach but our bodies know far better than any doctor or Pharmaceutical company how much natural foods we can eat. We don’t trust our bodies enough because we have been brought up in a society that believes every word our doctor says.

These are far better for your blood pressure than pills

Let me give you an example. In the late 90’s my doctor told me my blood pressure was rising and although it was not at a bad level she placed me on blood pressure medication. She told me once I started taking these pills I could never stop because if I did I may die. Yes you read that right. ‘If you stop taking the pills Kevin you may die.’

Now that kind of statement is going to scare anyone! So like a good little sheep I started paying $50 a month for my blood pressure medication. Fast forward to 2012, and yes I was still paying my $50 a month for my pills, and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. As it turns out I was sent on a 10 week secondment with my job to an immigration detention centre in the far north west of Australia, a place called Curtin.

I decided I would buy a 10 week batch of the pills to keep taking while I was away. That’s when my partner, Joy, stepped in. She told me I should just stop taking them as I was very healthy, did lots of running and swimming and my blood pressure was good. I was a little scared, after all my doctor said if I stop taking them I might die, but I decided to take her advice. I stopped cold turkey.

Throw Away Your Blood Pressure Pills!

First day of my secondment I threw the pills in the bin. 10 weeks later I was still alive and feeling great! My blood pressure was fine. Nearly 20 years of taking these pills and I never needed them. If that is not telling you something then nothing will. I was taking pills and paying a big pharmaceutical company $50 a month for nothing. How many other men and women out there are doing the same? Ruby red grapefruits do a far better job of lowering your blood pressure than any statin drugs.

As for my prostate diagnosis you can read about how I healed prostate cancer naturally here>>>>>

The really funny thing is that i had an enlarged prostate to start with that was healed after I stopped taking the pills along with some fasting and Don Tolmans protocol. Needless to say I don’t see doctors anymore.

I get as much turmeric into me as I can!

But let’s get back to the main reason for this article. Turmeric is a natural food, a healing food and a safe food. There is no reason to take bucket loads to heal yourself. You only need 5 to 8 grams 3 or 4 times a week. It is not going to harm you it is only going to help and heal you. How much turmeric in a day is healthy? As much as you need and feel is good for you.

If turmeric root or powder is not available in your area then this is the best liquid form of turmeric I know.

PuraTHRIVE Organic Liposomal Turmeric Extract is bioavailable which means it can be absorbed straight into the blood stream. Many supplements don’t do that. Be careful and thoroughly research what you decide to buy.

  1. Hi Kevin,

Do you have any idea why they say Turmeric should not be taken by pregnant women or breast feeding mothers? Our daughter is pregnant and I had given her some of the magi complexx by organixx fromTy Bollinger, “The Truth About Cancer”. Luckily, I guess, only one month supply.

  2. This is a great turmeric dosage guide you have here. I am a firm believer of alternative healing and I think that going natural is a better option. We have been taking turmeric tea to maintain our blood pressure too. However one of the main challenges we face is not knowing how much to take of certain supplements and what dosage works best.

I am glad that the University of Maryland has undertaken some research on turmeric and has come up with recommended doses. This takes the guesswork out of it. I just wish that alternative healing receives wider acceptance so that everyone is provided with options and is given the freedom to choose what works best.

    • Hi Kathy,

Thanks for your comments. Yes there is much confusion out there, a lot is deliberate to put people off natural remedies and keep them on pills in my opinion.
Glad to see you are taking turmeric tea for blood pressure. Ruby red grapefruits are also great to lower blood pressure.

      Cheers, Kev

  3. What a nice article and WOW congrats on your psotate cancer healing. This is something huge and I wanted to highlight it ! Now I’m 27 years old and since I injured my back at 18yo I always wanted to learn more about fitness and health Not only to heal my back but also to be healthy. I have read a lot on nutrition and never knew that Turmeric could have very positive impact on your health.

Though I must the best part was when reading your opinion about Big Pharma. I do believe that al you said was logical and true from my opinion. I have went to doctors a lot and personally except from giving me pills they don’t do much. One even told me once well you know.. you should learn to live with pain and maybe I could make you see a psychologist. Really? How to live with pain? Why not helping me get RID OF PAIN instead ! “The only doctor is the doctor within”

I always love to try new things and from reading this I might be interested to buy turmeric soon. I’ll be sure to come back to you when that happens.

    Have a good day Kevin

    • Hi JP,

Thanks for your comments. really appreciate your positive feedback. Yes doctors are taut to hand out pills and not much else sadly, however things are slowly changing. Yes I can believe a doctor told you to just get used to the pain haha! That is terrible! Yes the only doctor is the doctor within! So so true.
Yes please give turmeric a try JP. Your body will love it 🙂

      Have a great week, Kev

  4. Great post. It definitely makes me want to try turmeric. I’ve always heard of it but have never given it a try. I’ll most likely be able to get my hand on the powder. So two questions, how do you suggest I prepare the turmeric powder so that I get how much I need but also so that it had a good taste? And also. would you recommend taking the powder just as it is?

    • Hi Lindsey,

Yes definitely give it a try. Your body will love you for it. I use the powder in juices and in curries etc. For juices just use half a teaspoon and juice it with maybe pineapple and orange. Lovely juice. But always add a pinch of black pepper and a teaspoon of coconut or olive oil and mix that in so it absorbs better into the blood.I wouldn’t recommend taking it as is. Would not be nice. Add to stews, stir fries, juices, smoothies and even small amounts to cereal. I have done that before haha!

      Hope that helps, Kev

  5. Hi Kevin!
Wow, it’s funny how some things come about. Over the last couple of months, I’ve seen more and more about turmeric and have noted that I should find out more about it and perhaps incorporate it into my daily intake. Your post and site has me convinced. I’ve signed up to your newsletter and will follow along with interest and gratitude.
    Thanks and keep it up!
    Best wishes,

  6. Hello Kev, it is always good to read information on health and beneficial poducts. We all need to wake up to the fact that no one will care about our health than we do ourselves. I think your image on Big Pharma and the words are funny. Yet it is an extremely serious life and death issue.

I’m glad you are one of those who ‘escaped’ with his life and got better as a result. I salute you for turning it around and helping to show others, (the young and the older ones) that there is a better and healthier way to live and it is up to us to choose.

Kev, live long and strong and keep demonstrating it to all who will listen. Thank you for such a life expanding post.

    • Hi EJ,

Thanks so much for your kind words. Appreciate them. Yes I like to have a bit of a laugh at Big Pharma but know it’s a very serious topic too. Haha yes I ‘escaped’ the clutches of so called ‘health care’. Give me lifes natural healers anyday.

Yes there is a much better way to health.

All the very best EJ, may you live long and healthy and happy 🙂

    • Hi Julie,

You heard right. Turmeric does help Alzheimer’s. One of the major causes of Alzheimer’s is chronic inflammation of the nerve cells. As you know turmeric is a wonderful anti inflammatory. Certainly better than any pill I know of. So it can break down the inflammation around cells. I could write an article about that and will one day. Check out this article that really explains the research and how it works far better than me
      Hope this helps Julie, Kev

  7. Hi Kevin! Thanks for the article I had no idea how many benefits turmeric has! I will start including it more in my diet it tastes so yummy it’s one of my favourite spices. I’m glad your health is getting better too. =)

    • Hi Hailey,

Yes turmeric is amazing. It helps to heal so many issues in the body. Definitely start using it in your food, juices etc, it will make a big difference 🙂

  8. Hi, Kevin! Another informative post about turmeric! I couldn’t agree more with what you’ve mentioned about – what did you call it?- Big Pharma! They are so hypocrites! They only care about our money and they do not give a s@@t about our health and well-being! Yes, we should take as much turmeric as we need and feel that is good for us and that’s it! Thanks again for this post! I really enjoy reading it!
    Best wishes,
    Rebecca! 🙂

    • Thanks Rebecca,

Yes I am not a fan of Big Pharma at all. They know natural remedies work but will continue to suppress the information in favour of money and the declining health of peoples lives. Thanks for visiting again and appreciate your support,
