Fasting has been around since the beginning of time. Think about what an injured animal’s first instincts are – to abstain from solid food until it feels healthy again. It only drinks water. Animals know that they will heal quicker when they abstain from solid food. They know solid food will be a huge burden on their digestive system, slowing down their healing. But what is a juice fast?
Lets do a little more digging first. What do you normally do when you are ill? You stop eating. When I was a kid my mum would make me drink lolly water (lemonade or soda) instead of feeding me. I know now that stuff is full of sugar but back in the day no one knew any better. But look at the picture of the dog here and I am sure you can recall from childhood your own dog or cat being sick and just resting and drinking water.
So the human body has this same instinct to stop eating when illness strikes. There is also the widespread practice of fasting amongst many religious cultures in both the ancient and modern times. Yes they knew even way back then that fasting was healing for the body. You can read about a history of fasting here.
What fasting does is cleanse the body of pollutants, gives the digestive system a rest after years of working daily and helps prevent and even heal our bodies.
Eating Non Stop For 45 Years!
Think about this – Imagine you are 45 years old and you have never done a fast of any kind – Day after day your body takes in enormous amounts of food. That is approximately 16,425 days of non stop food! I feel sick just thinking about that! Your bodies digestive system has never had a rest. When the digestive system gets no rest from processing food day after day, the toxins from all the processed foods, medications and just plain junky food, starts building up. It gets to a stage where the body is unable to rid itself of the toxins, waste products, body acids, excess proteins and body fats.
So what does the body do? If these toxins are not cleaned out it can lead to diseases like cancer and other numerous diseases of the body. Have you ever wondered why cancer is on the increase? We have all these you bute pills, chemo, radiation and the latest super cancer killer! Guess what? If you keep eating rubbish and never give your body a chance to rest and cleanse, no pill is going to help you. It might put it off for a while but eventually chemo and radiation kills humans. Not the cancer!
Every year more than 5 billion is spent on cancer research in the US alone. And every year more and more people die from cancer. Is it becoming obvious yet? Here’s a hint. The Big Pharmaceuticals (who do most of this research) don’t want to find a cure for cancer! If they had a cure who would buy all their other fancy and expensive pills and poisons? No one. They would lose all the billions they make at your expense.
Ok so that is my rant against Big Pharma. Suffice to say we already have a cure for cancer. Plant foods and whole grains. I know. I healed myself using plant food, juices, fasting, exercise, meditation, fresh air and sunshine. And a dose of good healthy relationships. (read love)
So What Does Fasting Do?
So fasting is necessary to give the digestive system a rest and more importantly cleanse your body of all the built up toxins. While you are doing a fast your body will feed itself on all the impure toxic waste you have built up over time. It burns this as basically rubbish. They get dumped into the blood stream. So the body can become poisoned and ill. That is why so many people get headaches and feel terrible during a fast. It’s your body detoxing and sometimes its not nice, but it needs to be done. The blood is cleaning itself of all this toxic rubbish that you have planted there over 45 years!
So doing a fruit juice fast can make you feel sick while it is actually healing you. Its a two edged sword. Your stomach and intestines will shrink considerably especially after the 3rd day. Your heart activity will slow down. Pulse becomes slower and heartbeat slows. So fasting helps lower blood pressure and can heal the tissues of the heart. You can also start to feel quite emotional during a fast. I did a fast back in January 2016 and during the fast one of my musical hero’s, David Bowie, died and a neighbour was killed in a motorbike accident. I don’t normally get emotional but I was really sad for a number of days. I played a lot of Bowie music for days after his death whilst on my fast. So fasting can take you back to your bare bones, your true self. Many emotions can come up. This is your body connecting to the true you. Now this may sound a little booga boogaish and out there but it really is true. Your body is healing and taking you back to how your body should be. Now that can be painful but also very exciting.
Dr. Paul Bragg states: (in the book The Miracle of Fasting, p. 145). “Fasting is not a cure of any disease or ailment. The purpose of the fast is to allow the body full range and scope to fulfil its self-healing, self-repairing, self-rejuvenating functions to the best advantage. … … [Fasting is] probably the fastest and safest way or means of regaining health ever conceived by the human man.… Fasting puts the body in a condition where all the Vital Force of the body is used to flush out the causes of body miseries.”
Benefits of Fasting
Weight loss – Weight loss and fasting are like swimming and getting wet! You can’t have one without the other. But many people, once they come off a fast quickly get back into old habits and the weight returns very quickly. So there a better benefits than losing weight. However it can break many food habits like coffee, sweets, alcohol, smoking and other bad addictions as long as your are strong mentally, which again fasting can help with.
Loss of inflammation – your bodies immune system is greatly eased of workload and your digestive tract has a break from toxic food that causes inflammation.
Cleans out pesticides and toxins – Through fasting any pesticides and toxic medications stored in your fat are eliminated.
Fasting allows your body to rest therefore giving it more time to use its own healing powers to set to work on any disease or injury you may have. When food is continually added your digestive system is working non stop. It needs time to rest and allow the body to heal itself.
You really become more physically aware and sensitive to your diet, your relationships and your environment.
This helps you heal at a greater speed. meditation should also be incorporated in to any kind of fast (in my honest opinion!) as it also helps to slow the mind and again aids in healing at a faster rate. Becoming present and aware is also an aid to youthfulness.
So What is a Juice Fast and How Do You Do One?
A juice fast is where you drink freshly squeezed juices and water for a set number of days and consume nothing else. No solid food.
A juice fast can be 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 40 days or even longer in some instances. I have personally gone 14 days on juice as part of my own healing and found it life changing. It certainly helped heal my body. There are not set rules on the amount.
Blending is Not Juicing!
When you throw an apple, a banana and a mango in the Nutri Bullet (blender) it is called a smoothie. Not a juice. Juicing is where you have a proper juicer and the pulp and flesh of the produce is separated from the pure juice. Now obviously you cannot juice a banana or a mango or an avocado and things of this nature because they are too mushy. So produce like carrots, apples, beetroot, spinach and celery are ideal to juice. So when someones offers you a banana and mango juice, know that it is either flavoured lolly water (sugar with water!) or its a smoothie. Hope that clears a misconception that a lot of people have. If you don’t have a juicer this is the one I use. It’s an Oscar Neo DA 1000. I have had it for over 3 years and love it.
The Types of Fasts
- Juice Fast – just freshly squeezed juice and water for the length of the fast. No food
- Water Fast – a water fast is solely water and nothing else for the length of the fast.
- Raw Fruit and Vegetable fast – as the name suggests you just eat raw fruit and vegetables and drink water or juices.
The quickest way to heal is with a water fast. Next best is juicing followed by fruit and vegetables. There is a thing called a dry fast where you eat and drink nothing for a set period but I don’t recommend it. You should fast at least 3 or 4 times a year particularly at change of seasons. This way you keep your body clean and prevent many diseases from forming in your body. I like juice fasts because I absolutely love fruit and vegetables. One thing to never forget on a juice fast is you also need to drink plenty of water as well. My usual daily consumption is between 2 and 3 litres of fresh juice and 2 litres of water. Thats it for the whole day. You always need water.
