What is a Juice Fast and Why Should I Do One?

Fasting has been around since the beginning of time. Think about what an injured animal’s first instincts are – to abstain from solid food until it feels healthy again. It only drinks water. Animals know that they will heal quicker when they abstain from solid food. They know solid food will be a huge burden on their digestive system, slowing down their healing. But what is a juice fast?

Sick animals rest and drink water

Lets do a little more digging first. What do you normally do when you are ill? You stop eating. When I was a kid my mum would make me drink lolly water (lemonade or soda) instead of feeding me. I know now that stuff is full of sugar but back in the day no one knew any better. But look at the picture of the dog here and I am sure you can recall from childhood your own dog or cat being sick and just resting and drinking water.

So the human body has this same instinct to stop eating when illness strikes. There is also the widespread practice of fasting amongst many religious cultures in both the ancient and modern times. Yes they knew even way back then that fasting was healing for the body. You can read about a history of fasting here.

What fasting does is cleanse the body of pollutants, gives the digestive system a rest after years of working daily and helps prevent and even heal our bodies.

Eating Non Stop For 45 Years!

what is a juice fast
Imagine you spent 45 years eating rubbish!

Think about this – Imagine you are 45 years old and you have never done a fast of any kind – Day after day your body takes in enormous amounts of food. That is approximately 16,425 days of non stop food! I feel sick just thinking about that! Your bodies digestive system has never had a rest. When the digestive system gets no rest from processing food day after day, the toxins from all the processed foods, medications and just plain junky food, starts building up. It gets to a stage where the body is unable to rid itself of the toxins, waste products, body acids, excess proteins and body fats.

So what does the body do? If these toxins are not cleaned out it can lead to diseases like cancer and other numerous diseases of the body. Have you ever wondered why cancer is on the increase? We have all these you bute pills, chemo, radiation and the latest super cancer killer! Guess what? If you keep eating rubbish and never give your body a chance to rest and cleanse, no pill is going to help you. It might put it off for a while but eventually chemo and radiation kills humans. Not the cancer!

Every year more than 5 billion is spent on cancer research in the US alone. And every year more and more people die from cancer. Is it becoming obvious yet? Here’s a hint. The Big Pharmaceuticals (who do most of this research) don’t want to find a cure for cancer! If they had a cure who would buy all their other fancy and expensive pills and poisons? No one. They would lose all the billions they make at your expense.

Ok so that is my rant against Big Pharma. Suffice to say we already have a cure for cancer. Plant foods and whole grains. I know. I healed myself using plant food, juices, fasting, exercise, meditation, fresh air and sunshine. And a dose of good healthy relationships. (read love)

So What Does Fasting Do?

what is a juice fastSo fasting is necessary to give the digestive system a rest and more importantly cleanse your body of all the built up toxins. While you are doing a fast your body will feed itself on all the impure toxic waste you have built up over time. It burns this as basically rubbish. They get dumped into the blood stream. So the body can become poisoned and ill. That is why so many people get headaches and feel terrible during a fast. It’s your body detoxing and sometimes its not nice, but it needs to be done. The blood is cleaning itself of all this toxic rubbish that you have planted there over 45 years!

So doing a fruit juice fast can make you feel sick while it is actually healing you. Its a two edged sword. Your stomach and intestines will shrink considerably especially after the 3rd day. Your heart activity will slow down. Pulse becomes slower and heartbeat slows. So fasting helps lower blood pressure and can heal the tissues of the heart. You can also start to feel quite emotional during a fast. I did a fast back in January 2016 and during the fast one of my musical hero’s, David Bowie, died and a neighbour was killed in a motorbike accident. I don’t normally get emotional but I was really sad for a number of days. I played a lot of Bowie music for days after his death whilst on my fast. So fasting can take you back to your bare bones, your true self. Many emotions can come up. This is your body connecting to the true you. Now this may sound a little booga boogaish and out there but it really is true. Your body is healing and taking you back to how your body should be. Now that can be painful but also very exciting.

Dr. Paul Bragg states: (in the book The Miracle of Fasting, p. 145). “Fasting is not a cure of any disease or ailment. The purpose of the fast is to allow the body full range and scope to fulfil its self-healing, self-repairing, self-rejuvenating functions to the best advantage. … … [Fasting is] probably the fastest and safest way or means of regaining health ever conceived by the human man.… Fasting puts the body in a condition where all the Vital Force of the body is used to flush out the causes of body miseries.”

Benefits of Fasting

what is a juice fastWeight loss – Weight loss and fasting are like swimming and getting wet! You can’t have one without the other. But many people, once they come off a fast quickly get back into old habits and the weight returns very quickly. So there a better benefits than losing weight. However it can break many food habits like coffee, sweets, alcohol, smoking and other bad addictions as long as your are strong mentally, which again fasting can help with.

Loss of inflammation – your bodies immune system is greatly eased of workload and your digestive tract has a break from toxic food that causes inflammation.

Cleans out pesticides and toxins – Through fasting any pesticides and toxic medications stored in your fat are eliminated.

Fasting allows your body to rest therefore giving it more time to use its own healing powers to set to work on any disease or injury you may have. When food is continually added your digestive system is working non stop. It needs time to rest and allow the body to heal itself.

You really become more physically aware and sensitive to your diet, your relationships and your environment.
This helps you heal at a greater speed. meditation should also be incorporated in to any kind of fast (in my honest opinion!) as it also helps to slow the mind and again aids in healing at a faster rate. Becoming present and aware is also an aid to youthfulness.

So What is a Juice Fast and How Do You Do One?

A juice fast is where you drink freshly squeezed juices and water for a set number of days and consume nothing else. No solid food.

A juice fast can be 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 40 days or even longer in some instances. I have personally gone 14 days on juice as part of my own healing and found it life changing. It certainly helped heal my body. There are not set rules on the amount.

Blending is Not Juicing!

The juicer I use and I love it.

When you throw an apple, a banana and a mango in the Nutri Bullet (blender) it is called a smoothie. Not a juice. Juicing is where you have a proper juicer and the pulp and flesh of the produce is separated from the pure juice. Now obviously you cannot juice a banana or a mango or an avocado and things of this nature because they are too mushy. So produce like carrots, apples, beetroot, spinach and celery are ideal to juice. So when someones offers you a banana and mango juice, know that it is either  flavoured lolly water (sugar with water!) or its a smoothie. Hope that clears a misconception that a lot of people have. If you don’t have a juicer this is the one I use. It’s an Oscar Neo DA 1000. I have had it for over 3 years and love it.

The Types of Fasts

  1. Juice Fast – just freshly squeezed juice and water for the length of the fast. No food
  2. Water Fast – a water fast is solely water and nothing else for the length of the fast.
  3. Raw Fruit and Vegetable fast – as the name suggests you just eat raw fruit and vegetables and drink water or juices.

The quickest way to heal is with a water fast. Next best is juicing followed by fruit and vegetables. There is a thing called a dry fast where you eat and drink nothing for a set period but I don’t recommend it. You should fast at least 3 or 4 times a year particularly at change of seasons. This way you keep your body clean and prevent many diseases from forming in your body. I like juice fasts because I absolutely love fruit and vegetables. One thing to never forget on a juice fast is you also need to drink plenty of water as well. My usual daily consumption is between 2 and 3 litres of fresh juice and 2 litres of water. Thats it for the whole day. You always need water.

Join Me For A Juice Fast!

Over at the Turmeric Heals Facebook group we are running a Juice Fast early in the New Year 2017, and then regularly over the rest of the year. You can do 1 day, 3 days, 5 days or a 7 day juice fast. Join us by following this link Turmeric Heals Facebook Group

And don’t forget to use turmeric in your juices whenever you fast! Add black pepper and coconut oil or olive oil so it will absorb into the blood. If you can’t get raw turmeric root or powder and ONLY if you can’t get the real thing I highly recommend Pura Thrive’s Turmeric liquid supplement. This is the only liquid supplement I recommend as it is bioavailable which means it will absorb into the blood.

  1. My Dad does this fast at least once every year and all he has is fruit juice! I’m surprised because up till now I always thought that only Christians fast!!! It is a way to build up a stronger relationship with the Lord and He encourages His people to fast regularly. Thats how fasting all began! Not me though! I tend to get severe headaches when I go without food for long periods of time. I did the forty hour famine once and had a splitting one for a whole day 🙁

    • Hi Emma,

Thanks for your comments. Yes fasting has been around for thousands of years, the Romans, Egyptians, Indians all fasted for health reasons as do dogs and cats or any animal.
Your headaches are probably a result of your body getting rid of toxins. Thats the tough part. Once through that things get better. Good on your dad! Well done 🙂

      Best wishes, Kev

  2. Kev,
I do a 1 – 3 day fast with only water about every two months. The juice fast sounds a lot more healthy than my plain water fast. Do you have a 3 day menu guide to suggest for a three day juice fast. I like how you separated the juice from the fruit and vegetable drinks, there is a big difference. I do the fruit and vegetable drinks for snacks, without the sugar water.

    • Hi John,

Thanks for your comments. Appreciate them. yes I only drink freshly squeezed juices. Not the rubbish from the supermarkets that are full of processed sugar.
If you head to my facebook group I just posted a pdf of some of my favourite juices and they are ideal for a 3 day juice fast. The link is in the bottom of the article.

      Cheers mate,

  3. Love this post. Am a true believer in tumeric and juicing and their healing properties. They are also great alkalisers for our overloaded system. For years tumeric and juicing has been part of my daily regime and its the best thing I do for myself.

    • Thanks Jenene,

Great that you have been using it for years. You would be feeling the benefits.
Thanks for commenting, glad you liked it.

      Happy New Year,

  4. Hi Kevin,

What a great post about Fasting! I’ve always wanted to try it but never have. I’ll have to check out the juicer you use. We have a Vitamix and make smoothies with it, but I know that juicing has different benefits as you pointed out than smoothies. Could one go on a smoothie cleanse? Sorry for the silly question… I think I know the answer but would love your point of view.

    Thanks for your juicing info!

    • Hi grace,

thank you. yes juicing is different to a smoothie. having said that yes you can do a smoothie fast but make sure it is only fruit and veges with water or with almond or soy milk only. Preferably just water. Don’t add any ice cream or yoghurt.Good question thanks Grace 🙂 Kev

  5. I have started today with giving up cigs and alcohol for-well, you should take one day at a time-but at least a week. Have decided to do a water fast(since I don’t have a juicer, yet but will soon) for a day or two maybe. Partly because of all the reasons you mentioned but also because of the mental strength part. I need/want to work on that. Maybe that is all too much at one time, I don’t know but will shoot for 24 hours without food and such.

I believe everything happens for a reason so I know that your post came to me today for this reason.

    Thank you for that.

    And happy new year.

    • Hi Brent,

Thanks for the comments and good on you for having a go at improving your health! And yes one day at a time is a great way to approach it. Just water is great. You can also do intermittent fasting by only water or juice till lunchtime. This works well also. The mental strength is fantastic to obtain too. You know you can do anything then.

Good luck with it all and Happy New Year to you 🙂 Kev

  6. Hi Kevin

Very interesting post. I never even considered fasting, and didn’t know about any of these benefits. Great thought for the new year to start afresh. Excellent post. Very informative.

    • Thanks Steve,

Fasting opens up a whole new world most definitely. More people need to know about it. Thanks for the comments and Happy New Year 🙂

  7. Hi Kev,
This is a really thought provoking post. I know fasting. What I usually experience in my life is Muslims fast for a month every year. But their fasting is that you can only eat before dawn and after dusk.

I’ve never heard of juice fast before. It’s worth a try, given that you only consume healthy stuff. But I’m sure it takes a lot of determination. When you are sick you lost your appetite. But if you aren’t sick, commuting to juice fast really requires determination and perseverance in my opinion. I’m a person who likes to eat and always eat a lot. This will be a challenge for me.

Anyway, thanks for this informative post. Love it!

    • Thank you Jerry,

Yes I used to work in Immigration here in Australia so know a lot about Ramadan. That would be tough to do. Yes it takes a lot of mental strength to take on juice fasting but the results are pretty amazing. I hope you give it a go. let me know how you do. Thanks for the great comments, Cheers, Kev

  8. Hey Kevin!

Fantastic post, I must say! I have recently bought my own cold press juicer and have already noticed the incredible benefits from juicing! However, I had no idea how beneficial of a super food Tumeric is to the body. I’ve mainly been juicing with the fruits and vegetables you’ve mentioned above and I’m definitely noticing the healing effect it has on my body. I truly believe that eating life force foods such as fruits and vegetables are the best medicine for our bodies physically and spiritually. I’ll be sure to add Tumeric to the mix after reading this post.

Thanks again for this great, informative article Kevin! Book marked your website(:

    • Hey Shaker,

Thanks so much for that. Great you have a real juicer. Your body will love that! Haha. Yes turmeric really is an effective healer. I used to get so sore from running but now I have a turmeric juice straight after a run and I can run again the next day. Life force foods are definitely what I am about. The only real way to heal.

See you back here soon. All the very best Kev

  9. Ill be honest, the thought of fasting would scare the crap out of me lol I love my food!! But on the other hand, I never knew the benefits of actually doing it until now and I admit it is very interesting and really makes a lot of sense. There is a lot of great information in this article

    • Cheers Nathan,

Yes there is a lot to gain from fasting. Steering clear of doctors and pills is the way to go and fasting has healed me far more than any doctors pill.

Thanks for your comment and hopefully you will give it a go sometime 🙂 Cheers, Kev

  10. Thanks Kev, this has been very interesting for me to read. I have always been a skinny person and it appeared I could eat all I wanted. I had two kids and easily got back to my pre-pregnancy weight after my second child.

Then I gave up smoking and started eating loads of junk food. It just goes to show now that I cannot eat whatever I want. Perhaps it is my age or maybe it is just that I have never eaten so badly as the first few months after quitting smoking.

I have never been on a diet or a fast before but I am starting to think that maybe a fast might do me the world of good. I’m not so focused on losing weight as such, but more about detoxing and getting healthy.

    • Hi Lynne,

Thanks for your comments. Yes a fast would certainly help you no end. Eating lots of junk food is not going to help your body so if you can get onto the healthy lifestyle your body will love you and you will feel a lot better too.

If you need any more advice or want to do our first fast for the year check out the link to the facebook group at the bottom of the article. All the very best, Kev

  11. Hi there, fasting is super healthy, verified! In my religion, we must fast for a month; it’s hard in the first days but as days go we get used to it, the month is called Ramadan if you have ever heard about it 🙂

We give our digestive system a month of rest, we do eat in the evening, of course, I did not know that fasting has all these benefits so thanks for sharing.

The only difference in our fasting is we don’t drink juices, we should not eat or drink in Ramadan.

Thanks for sharing this awesome post and have a great day 🙂

    • Hi Anis,

Thanks for a great comment. Appreciate that. yes I know about Ramadan as I used to work in a Detention Centre and often spoke to the guys about it. Thats a great way of fasting too. Definitely gives the digestive system a break.

Thanks again and have a great day, Kev

  12. Hi, Kev!
Another great post from you! It is great that you are talking about fasting since we Orthodox fast several times a year! It is definitely a great opportunity to detox as well as to lose weight! Thanks for the tip about olive oil and turmeric absorption. I am going to use it in my juices as soon as possible! Once again, great article, useful info! 🙂
    Best wishes,

    • Thanks Rebecca!

Yes fasting is such a great thing to do for your body. Yes the pepper and oil are important in a juice with turmeric. Otherwise the body just discards it.

Thanks for your comments, appreciate them, Kev
