What is Golden Paste and How Do You Make It? More Secret Recipes!

What is Golden Paste? This is a question I asked myself some months back as I had heard of it and knew it contained turmeric but had no idea how you made it or what it’s uses were. Having a website devoted to the amazing healing powers of turmeric I figured it was well and truly time to find out how it was made and it’s benefits. I am a firm believer that it is important to keep learning every day of our lives. So learning all about Golden Paste was a day of learning for me.

It turns out Golden Paste (also known as Turmeric Paste), is an easy condiment to make and has amazing benefits for the body. Golden Paste is also great for animals, mainly dogs and horses. More on that later. Turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years medicinally (read a history of turmeric) and has been proven scientifically to be equal to or more effective than 14 different Rx drugs. (prescription drugs)

So taking it daily in a cooked paste that is designed to assist with its absorption into the body is an easy way to tap into it’s amazing benefits.

It Is a Super Paste!

What is golden paste? It is a super paste! Ok so I have your attention. Lets see how easy this Super Paste is to make! Wow. I like that, Super Paste. We have Superfoods so I figure it’s time for the poor old pastes that don’t get much recognition to be front and centre for a change! Yes! Super Paste… Sorry I do get a little carried away. But I can assure you it IS a Super Paste!

How to Make Golden Paste

There are many different ways to make Golden Paste but I will stick with the basic way but also mention other ingredients that you can add to the recipe.

what is golden pasteTurmeric powder, organic raw cold pressed coconut or olive oil, freshly ground black pepper corns, fresh filtered water. That’s it. It is preferable that all ingredients are organic where possible.

1/2 cup of turmeric powder

1/3 cup of coconut oil

3 tea spoons ground peppercorns

1 cup of water (preferably clean filtered water) Can use coconut water if preferred.

Mix the turmeric powder and water into a pot or a pan (whatever you prefer to cook with) Some recipes say bring to boil but I prefer to put it on high heat for around 1 minute then allow it to cook on a low heat and keep stirring for 4 to 7 minutes until it produces a thick paste. It will get hot and have steam coming off it but usually when I boil things I end up burning them haha! So I will steer clear of boiling it but it is cooked very well with my method. You can add more water if it gets too thick for you. I like mine fairly thick.

Once you are happy with the mix pour the paste into a mixing bowl. Then add the black pepper and oil. Stir these ingredients by hand until they are all mixed in together.

Allow to cool, then place the mix in a jar. This makes around 350grams. It will keep for up to 3 weeks in the fridge. I actually had one for nearly 4 weeks so it is quite hardy.

Golden Paste for Horses and Dogs

What is golden paste for horses and dogs? Really? Golden Paste has been used for centuries on horses and dogs. Ancient text from India shows veterinarians using turmeric on animals as far back as the 10th century. This is a whole other blog post but to find out more about it’s use on animals check out this post – Turmeric For HorsesDr Doug English is credited with developing the Golden Paste and it’s use in animals.

Why use Black Peppercorns? The human body has a tough time absorbing turmeric and it’s active ingredient, curcumin. Black pepper contains piperine which is a substance that aids the bioavailability by up to 2,000%! That means the turmeric can be absorbed much better into the blood stream if you add the black pepper.

Why use Coconut oil? – Like the pepper, fats like coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil can assist in the bioavailability of the turmeric into the body.

How long will the Golden Paste last in the fridge? – Maximum 3 to 4 weeks. I have used Golden Paste that is 4 weeks old. You will know by the smell if it is going off.

Can I eat it straight out of the jar? – Absolutely. Be warned though it is an acquired taste. You can add cinnamon powder, ginger powder and coconut water to the mix to make it taste better.

  1. Why would golden paste go off in as little as 4 weeks, what is in the mixture which will deteriorate?
I don’t understand why it shouldn’t keep indefinitely as none of the ingredients are particularly age dependent.

    • Hi Peter, we have to give this warning. Yes it should be fine but as it contains no preservatives we are obliged to have a use by date. Mine keeps for many many weeks. Cheers, Kev

  2. Thank you for this very informative info Kev. I have never heard of golden paste actually. So I guess we both learned something new when reading upon this. Turmeric is honestly awesome. So many benefits like you have mentioned for both physical and mental health. This paste does look good. I wonder how it tastes however lol? I really want to try it now. Again, thank you for this vital information. It is very important for us to brush up on our knowledge of the benefits of the world’s natural remedies. Turmeric heals!!

    • Hi Rob,

Thanks for that. Yes turmeric is like a magic bullet although I don’t like using those words but it really is a super healer. Haha the taste is interesting. Funnily enough I sold some today to a lady who actually took a spoonful straight and she said it was ok. I much prefer it in my smoothies and juices, stews, soups etc. Definitely worth trying the Golden Paste. It will be become a daily lifestyle habit if you are anything like me lol! Let me know if you try some 🙂

  3. Hi Kevin,
Thanks so much for all the great info. I will be making use of this info soon. I too have used the golden milk before but I never made a serious habit of it. I have been adding it to my last three squeeze bottles of Frenches mustard. They put a little in but turmeric doesn’t have much of a taste if you ask me and since it is so good for me, I stopped using Mayo, which is terrible for you unless you make your own at home because of the bad oils and such they insist on adding at least here in the US. So I use only mustard on burgers and any meat sandwich. Gonna try the dip idea one lady said. Anyway, please take this in the kind spirit it is intended. It was probably a typo but if you could take the T off the word learnt and make that learned it would look more professional and not drive the grammar and spelling folks crazy there at the end of this page. Thanks again and please take that the way it was meant as helpful advice and not an attack. Keep up the great work. You are helping people!

    • Hi David,

No offence taken my friend haha! I always get that word messed up! I will fix it. 4. Hello Kev,

I’m so glad that you have a WHOLE website talking about Turmeric and it’s magical benefits, thanks for highlighting the diseases which are being treated through it, as you said we really forget to use Turmeric in our food and in our lives.
This paste seems too new to me, can we add some salt and seasoning and use it as a dip beside vegetable sticks?

    • Hi Rawan,

Thanks for the comment. Yes I am a big turmeric fan. The paste is the best thing I have had as far as inflammation goes. Really feel the benefits. Yes definitely experiment with the Golden Paste, cinnamon is a popular addition but yes salt and seasoning would be good to maybe with some mixed herbs 🙂 Kev

  5. Well, I never knew!? I was searching for a natural way to ease my arthritis that leaves my left arm sore for weeks on end. Really glad I run into your website as you offer so many tips on how Tumeric can help! I did not imagine that Tumeric Paste can help with Depression and Brain Disorders.
In your recipe for making turmeric paste, you have add 1 cup of filtered water. Can I use bottled water that we buy from the supermarkets?
Looking forward to your response as I want to make up some Tumeric Paste as soon as possible. I love to cook up Stir Fries and especially love curries and stews.
Have bookmarked your website for future reference and signed up for the Newsletter.
    Very best regards, Jeff.

    • Hi Jeff,

Thanks so much for your great comments. Appreciate that. Now you know! Haha. Yes arthritis is a real pain so to speak and turmeric, as in the Golden Paste is really effective to help ease that. I really think turmeric should be taken by everyone and I know the good health movement is reaching more and more people around the globe so hopefully it will spread virally.

As long as you are having turmeric Jeff, then bottled water is fine. Don’t use tap water if you can possibly avoid it, but water from supermarket will be ok. Most people just eat junk and have never even heard of turmeric so your way ahead of them! Let me know how you go making Golden Paste. It’s kind of fun to make and really easy.

Thanks again for finding us and becoming part of the community here.

Have a brilliant turmeric day 🙂
